Sonic Adventure 2: Battle

OVERVIEW

Dr. Eggman is up to his old tricks again and it is up to sonic and co. to save the day. This time, Eggman has the world at ransom after he has blown up the moon and threatens to destroy the Earth. Dr Eggman is helped by Shadow and Rouge. Shadow is an evil sonic and rogue is a bat who has a passion for Chaos Emeralds. A good thing about this game is the fact that you can play as the good team and evil team. There are 30 levels combined plus multiplayer. Each level has multiple missions, 150 all up. There is plenty to do. PLUS there is the ability to raise Chao. This game offers a lot, but is what it offers good?

GRAPHICS

The graphics in this game are just on par. Nothing spectacular but good enough to turn a few heads. The characters all look good and the levels are o.k. The Knuckles and Rouge levels look better then the Sonic/Shadow levels but this is because the Sonic/Shadow levels are extremely fast. There are some pop-ups, usually enemies. The lip sync is terrible but at least they speak. With the shear size of the game you can allow some slip - ups. Overall the Sega team have done a pretty good job.

SOUND
This game has one of the best sound tracks ever heard. The sonic/shadow levels have rock music that perfectly suit the fast paced action you adhere. The knuckle/rogue levels are rap music which can get annoying because these levels can take up to an hour first time round. The Tails/Eggman levels are a mixture of both. The voices really enhance the games overall appeal. Although the sync is really bad it is better then words only. Overall the sound in this game is near perfect.

GAMEPLAY
Mixed emotions. Each type of gameplay has its good and bad points. We will start of with the Sonic/Shadow levels. These levels are the most fun. You must speed through a level that would take half an hour in around 5 - 10 minutes. So very, very fast. The problem with these levels is they are so linear. You run, hit something that make you go faster and then it does 80% of the rest by itself. Still, these levels are really fun. The Tails/Eggman levels put you inside a robot and you must shoot your way too the end. These levels are good because they are the right length. Not too short and not too long. These levels are somewhat linear as well but you get involved much more. The Shadow/Rouge levels are huge. These levels offer complete exploration. You can climb across walls too. You must find stuff in these levels, usually pieces of a Chaos emerald. The problem with these levels is the time it takes to find the pieces. Very, very tedious sometimes. Only some levels are bad, most are quite good though. The bossed in the game are done well. I cracked the shits with the Golem boss, almost broke the analogue on the control. Very frustrating. Overall the gameplay is good. The fact that is offers so many styles is a winner in itself. The kart racing mini-game is brilliant. Multiplayer is fun for a while but wont last forever. It was a very worthy inclusion though. This gameplay isn't near the best but it very good.

LASTABILITY
This game will last a long time. You could not hire it and get close to beating it. There a 30 levels, 150 missions, mini - games, multiplayer, Chao raising and more. Although there is a lot, not all are worth it. Getting an A ranking on each level is pointless to me but if you wanna do it, it will take you a long time. The replay value is very good and it will take at least a couple of months too beat 80%.

FINAL THOUGHTS

This game will appeal to a wide audience, both young and old. Nintendo fans wanting to play as the hedgehog will finally have their chance. This game is well worth the purchase if you like good 2nd rate adventure games. It is clear that Sega are not as strong as Nintendo and Sony but they can produce good games. This game has tedious moments, camera work that is shocking and just on par graphics but it is a game that has heart and it is fun to play. It may have some dirt on it but it is worth picking up and rubbing it. You will find if you look hard enough, it will shine.
